Border Terrier

Breed origin: Border country between Scotland and England.
Original purpose: Foxhunting.

AKC recognized: 1930
AKC group: Terrier

Size: Weight: males 13 to 15½ lbs; females 11½ to 14 lbs

Color: Red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten, usually with a dark muzzle.

Life span: 12 to 15 years.

General characteristics/temperament: The Border Terrier is alert, active, agile, good-tempered, affectionate, obedient, and easily trained. They are persistent in the field and make an excellent working terrier. As companions or family pets, they must be kept engaged and well-exercised because of their high activity level. Border Terriers learn quickly and respond well to training, making them a good candidate for various canine sports and activities.

Energy/Activity Level: High

Suitable canine sports/activities: earthdog, obedience, agilty, conformation, tracking, flyball, therapy

Exercise requirement: A long walk or vigorous play in the yard for 20 to 30 minutes daily.

Grooming requirement: The weather resistant coat needs to be brushed weekly and hand stripped twice a year. Hand stripping involves pulling out the dead outer coat by hand, or with the help of a stripping tool.

Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, eye problems, heart defects, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, allergies, malocclusions, luxating patellas.
