Breed origin: Uncertain, possibly Scotland or England
Original purpose: Drover dog, guiding cows and sheep to market.

Size: Weight: males 60 to 75 lbs; females 50 to 65 lbs
Size: Height: males 24 to 26 inches; females 22 to 24 inches

Color: Sable and white; tri-color; blue merle; or white with sable, tri-color or blue merle markings.

Life span: 10 to 14 years.

General characteristics/temperament: The Collie is lithe, strong, responsive, active, friendly, loyal, sensitive, and intelligent. They make excellent family dogs and are very devoted and loyal, especially with children. Collies are also a very clean breed and do not have a doggie odor.

Energy/Activity Level: Moderate

Suitable canine sports/activities: conformation, agility, obedience, herding

Exercise requirement: Daily walks would be ideal, but they are adaptable and can be couch potatoes as well.

Grooming requirement: Brush weekly or every two weeks, more frequently during shedding seasons. Collies do shed seasonally, usually once or twice a year, but they are very clean dogs and are noted for not having a doggie odor.

Known health problems: Collie eye anomaly, multi-drug sensitivity (to ivermectin and some other drugs), progressive retinal atrophy, gastric dilatation volvulus, dermatomyositis, grey collie syndrome, collie nose, demodicosis, epilepsy, hip dysplasia.
