Color: Solid black or pepper and salt, with a dark facial mask.

General characteristics/temperament: The Giant Schnauzer is active, sturdy, alert, intelligent, courageous, playful, and loyal. They are highly trainable and make a devoted companion as well as a powerful and enduring working dog. They are naturally protective, and can be good with children if properly trained and socialized. However, because they are big and powerful dogs, they can easily injure a small child accidentally. They are a high-energy breed, and can become very destructive if not given enough exercise.

Exercise requirement: Vigorous exercise required at least twice every day.

Grooming requirement: They are light shedders, and regular grooming will help minimize the shedding. A complete hand-stripping or plucking is required periodically for show dogs. Many pet owners opt to clip the coat with a clipper instead of hand-stripping it. Using clippers may soften the texture of the coat (a disqualification for show dogs), but is less time-consuming than hand-stripping.

Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, autoimmunie diseases, epilepsy, cancer.
