Life span: 12 to 15 years.

General characteristics/temperament: The Miniature Schnauzer is alert, spirited, obedient, friendly, robust, active, intelligent, and willing to please. They are devoted to their family and fond of children, making them great family pets. They are not a fighter typically, but will stand up for themselves if necessary, and make excellent watchdogs. They adapt easily to living in apartments as well as in the country. They have a strong prey drive and may chase and/or attack small pets such as birds, rodents, or sometimes cats. However, if they are raised with cats from a young age, they can learn to get along with them.

Grooming requirement: The double coat sheds very little but should be groomed by a professional every five to eight weeks. Some owners can learn to do the grooming themselves. The beard and leg furnishings should be brushed weekly. Bathe as necessary.

Known health problems: Juvenile renal disease, retinal dysplasia, urinary stones, progressive retinal atrophy, autoimmune diseases, cancer, myotonia congenita, neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.
