Original purpose: Herding sheep and cattle into major city markets.

Size: Weight: males 75 to 100 lbs; females 65 to 90 lbs
Size: Height: males at least 22 inches; females at least 21 inches

Color: Any shade of gray, grizzle, blue or blue merle with or without white markings.

Life span: 6 to 12 years.

General characteristics/temperament: The Old English Sheepdog is adaptable, intelligent, athletic, clownish, and affectionate. They have a lot of energy, and are happiest when given a job to do. They have a strong herding instinct, and may try to herd people or other objects.

Suitable canine sports/activities: conformation, obedience, agility, herding

Grooming requirement: Brush thoroughly at lease once weekly. Because of how long and profuse the coat is, it may take up to three hours each time. Some owners keep the coat trimmed to make it more manageable.

Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, cataracts, glaucoma, entropion, autoimmune diseases, ataxia, hypothyroidism, deafness, diabetes, allergies, progressive retinal atrophy, skin problems, cancer.
